What a Walsall:

von Seite 351, Channel 4 ceefax:

"Peter told PS: The libertines are playing a summer gig at Walsall's 9600 Capacity Bescot Stadium. The show - which doesn't have a confirmed date, would only be the second at the ground following The Wonderstuff in 1991.

Doherty Also revealed he's releasing a 7" only single on High Society under his Babyshambles alias. The song also called Babyshambles will be out "really soon".

Butler Hasn't done it.

Bernard Butler might be too busy to produce The Libertines new album, Pete Docherty has told PS.

"It's written we just need someone to press record" said Docherty. "Since he worked with us, Bernard's been too busy. If its not him, it'll be Mick Jones".

As well as writing again with Brett Anderson, Butler is making a third Mcalmont and Butler album and has spoken of making a third solo record.

Up the Rabbits.

The liberrtines have been talking to PS about their new album.

Pete Doherty said: "Its like the first one, its not just fast song, slow one. It's a mixed bag of rabbits. We've got Myxomatosis. That could be the title!

"There's a song called You Can't Stand Me, which is me and Carlos singing at each other. It's good enough to be the first single - there's that, Bugle and Likely Lads that are racing with each other to be first out the trap."

Carl ist krank:

von Peters letztem Post auf www.babyshambles.com:

"... dear Carl is ill, iller than ever even. His spirit when flailing can fall lower than you or I may shreik to e'er dare dwell on lest darkness nip all hope in the arse. I do meander and spout I know I know but I mean it (man). In prison, letters came to me from all quarters and a more uplifting ting in those dire circumstances than opening a letter with your name in ink upon I can hardly think of. Not least when the letter scrawls across the page with love, fervour of heart and scribe's art, silly pictures and filthy suggestion. I say this: Bigelles is in a prison of his own, some dark stinking cell in a land that friendship has no immediate application for visa for it seems..."

Review: Libs @ Rhythm Factory, 23. Dez 2003

von enjoyment.independent.co.uk:

[...] So, which bands to review when one gig turns into 14? The Libertines turned out to be the most famous act of the night. While the band played two new songs ("Last Post on the Bugle" and "The Likely Lads") from their coming single, there was dangerous mayhem in the little venue, with some punters even dancing along on stage, and the singer Peter Doherty crowd-surfing. It was certainly an intimate affair before the band's Kentish Town Forum gigs. [...]

Review: The Libs & The Beatings, London Forum, 18. Dez.

von www.drownedinsound.com:

[...]The 'Good Old Days' is certainly the most poignant track of the night, and the lyric "If you've lost your love and faith in music / the end won't be long" seems all the more appropriate given the context. The band's pal Rabbi joins them for a run-through traditional folkie 'Sally Brown' and new song 'Last Post On The Bugle' follows the blueprint set by 'Don't Look Back Into The Sun'. The gig ends in a typically chaotic way, Pete announcing after 'What A Waster' that the band won't play the next song without "at least another 65 people". Hysteria ensues as vast numbers of fans crowd-surf to the front in an attempt to join around one hundred lucky punters (including the writer) who join the band onstage in the proceeding stage invasion. Along with the Beatles, the Stones and Kinks before them, the Libertines have that crucial British quintessence that sets them apart from their peers. The charismatic pairing of Pete and Carl, Gary Powell's incredibly frenetic and dexterous drumming, along with the intriguing lyrics and urgency of their songs such as 'Time For Heroes' means that the 'Tines have the potential to go down in musical history as a truly great British band[...]

The Duke spirit, NME, 20.11.2003

"THE LIBERTINES played a blistering and tightly-packed gig last night (November 19), as 150 fans crammed into a north LONDON pub to watch a career-spanning set.

Playing at the Duke of Clarence pub in Islington, the band were first reunited with their previous drummer Mr Razzcocks, who joined in with versions of early Libertines songs 'You're My Waterloo', 'Love On The Dole', 'Bucketshop', and 'Seven Deadly Sins'.

Regular sticksman Gary Powell then took to the stage and the band ripped through 'Horrorshow', 'Death On The Stairs', 'The Delaney', 'Don't Look Back Into The Sun' and 'What A Waster'.

Earlier in the evening, guitarist Pete Doherty's side-project Babyshambles also played a set including the tracks 'What Katy Did', 'Kill A Man For His Giro' and 'Hooligans On E'.

The gig also marked the band's first live appearance since guitarist Carl Barat injured his left cheekbone.Carl played part of the gig with a red bandanna tied around his head obscuring his left eye.

The guitarist had two painful operations after a whisky-fuelled accident in Wales, when he slipped and cracked his head on a sink.

Carl told NME.COM: "I've got 70 stitches on the inside of my face. I wasn't ware that it happened. I got out of the bath and came a bit of a cropper. I managed to destroy three shelves before the sink."

Despite only reforming just days ago (October 8) and surprising fans with their first gig in over four months, sources close to the band have revealed that The Libertines are already thinking about playing their second date since bandmate Pete Doherty's release from prison.
As previously reported, Pete became a free man on Wednesday after serving one month in jail after pleading guilty to burglary after breaking into bandmate Carl Barat's flat (July 25), while The Libertines were touring in Japan. Later that night, Pete was joined on stage by the rest of the band, Carl included, at the Tap N’ Tin club in Chatham, Kent. Only 200 lucky fans were at the gig. The band's mate Rabbi joined them for versions of 'Sally Brown' and 'Dirty Old Town'...

LIBERTINE AT LIBERTY SOON?
from NME:

THE LIBERTINES could reform as soon as co-frontman PETE DOHERTY comes out of prison, NME.COM can reveal. Sources close to the band say Doherty's songwriting partner Carl Barat wants his old pal back in the band as soon as he is freed - and an appeal against his sentence could see Doherty out by November. Insiders have even begun talking about a Christmas single. Doherty's lawyer Richard Locke has also spoken of his hopes for the appeal and on what grounds he is going to contest Judge Roger Davies' decision. "We've launched an appeal," he told NME.COM. "We just have to wait. The court hasn't notified us of the date of the hearing yet. I'd say between two or four weeks with any luck, depending on how busy the court lists are." Locke added: "I've got good legal argument for an appeal, in that the sentence ought to be reduced certainly and possibly that (Pete) should have received a community penalty and not gone to prison at all. "The best argument is that six months was an excessive sentence because he wasn't given any credit for pleading guilty. He ought to have given a third off." As previously reported on NME.COM, Doherty pleaded guilty to burglary after breaking into Barat's flat on July 25, while The Libertines were touring in Japan. Horseferry Road Magistrates' Court heard Doherty admit to stealing an antique guitar, video recorder, a laptop, mouth organ, and a CD player. Whatever the outcome of the appeal, Doherty will only serve three months of the sentence behind bars. Locke said: "He's automatically released after three months but he'll be on licence which means if he gets into trouble or arrested he's brought straight back to serve the remainder of his sentence."

Review vom Troubadour Gig

Auszug: [...] There’s certainly humour tonight though as new song Hooligans On E has me cracking up what I can hear of the lyrics. The inevitable happens when they start playing Libertines songs and pretty much everyone invades the stupidly low stage and it all becomes a bit like a private party! Audience members grab the mike, sing the words with Pete occasionally joining in. He looked like he was enjoying himself. But you can’t help but think that this whole episode is unbelievably tragic. You know great bands when you see them, they do something to you that’s almost primal and The Libertines had that effect the first time I saw them. Babyshambles just filled me with sadness, with thoughts of promise lost and wasted youth.[...]

Sans Pete Doherty, all eyes are on The Libertines. I'm still not sure on the Libertines and this performance does little to win me over. The singles sound OK, nice tunes, but why do the rest of their songs sound like poor imitations? The sound is dreadful, guitars mushed up and Carl's vocals are barely audible (although saying that he doesn't seem to have the greatest voice in the world). They've got a long way to go before they convince me and sticking them on the main stage as a result of some ill-advised hype was never going to help them.... Maybe I'm being too harsh though, the remaining band members have been through a lot and playing without one of your main singers and songwriters must be difficult... von www.washingtonpost.com:

Rock wisdom holds that a band can only go as far as its drummer allows. For the Libertines, who have Gary Powell providing the backbeat, the sky's the limit.[...]
The Libertines have also done away with the British military uniforms worn in past performances and in music videos. The garb, along with being kitschy cool, made for a nice visual complement to the quartet's retro, fuzzy guitar-based sound, which updates the garage rock of, among others, Revolutionary-garbed elders Paul Revere and the Raiders. On "Horror Show" and "Up the Bracket," both played early in an hour-long set, Barat, now assuming the musical and vocal duties once provided by Doherty, sported a well-worn leather jacket, in which he shimmied across the stage in perfect time with Powell's banging blitzkrieg. That effort, combined with the heat in the jampacked upstairs room, eventually got the better of Barat, so he doffed his tough-guy get-up and danced bare-torso during the fab "Good Old Days."[...]

The Libertines @ The Black Cat, Washington DC August 16 2003k

Review von Helen

Will the Libertines ever complete a U.S. tour without interruption?

A force even greater than visa authorities and county curfews abbreviated this round by one. The biggest black out ever hit New York on the eve of the Irving Plaza gig. (Even though this will be made up, yipee!, New Orleans has been cancelled.) While many were concerned about perishable food, subways, and oh yeah, that electricity business, I woke up Friday wondering if the show would happen after all. I finally gave up hope at 7 that night when I got confirmation from the venue, but I thanked goodness for the Chinatown bus and counted on arriving in a fully-powered DC for the Black Cat gig the next night.

I don't have the exact setlist, but I can tell you what was played. (While I was aggressive enough to weave my way to the front, using my height disadvantage to squeeze past the last tall guy up by the stage, I wasn't quick enough to snatch the setlist!) Started with Horrorshow, ended the set with Skag & Bone Man, and saved What a Waster and I Get Along for the encore, yes I said encore! Moving up in the scheme of things? In between was everything off Up the Bracket except Radio America, with May Day, the Delaney, and Don't Look Back into the Sun added.

I hadn't jumped around and danced and sang and screamed like that in a while! I was a complete maniac. And to hear the songs I loved so much performed live again was absolute bliss. Of course I missed Peter, or rather the crazy, sexy combination of Peter and Carl and the vocal variation that makes the songs better somehow. But this was definitely overwhelmed by my admiration for Carl, and John, Gary, and Anthony. They rocked the Black Cat to pieces. It was gorgeous[...] mehr lesen...

THE LIBERTINES - 'DON'T LOOK BACK INTO THE SUN'

If you've been following the antics of these troubled indie rockers in our news section recently, you'll realise this could very easily be their last single. And if so, it's a crying shame. All the things that make the Libs one of the finest UK rock bands around are here. Ramshackle tempos, skittery guitars, music that veers between total mess and pristine glory and a madman shouting "Let me go!" like he's being given a wedgie. Pop should be this wild all the time, y'know.

Arriving in the club proper, it was immediately clear that half the room was sweating Old Style while the other half blew blue clouds of American Spirit into the sticky air. Inhaling was like chewing on an alpine ski sweater. No matter;[...] Barat, unmoving bassist John Hassell, drummer Gary Powell, and stand-in guitarist Anthony Rossomando broke forth with said jibber jabber, tearing through seemingly half their album in the first three impossibly catchy songs. And then something funny happened. Barat peeled off the leather, transforming himself into a glistening mop of Mazola. It was the first time in a long time we'd seen the no shirt move, and it was even more surprising considering the skinny, pale, and affected cliché that follows bands with haircuts such as theirs. Whipping his guitar around to face Powell, ripping in and out of songs and adding a gritty churn onto Rossomando's already dirty power chording, Barat was a one-man army of focused rock energy[...]

[...] The doors opened at 9:30. The opening band ended at 10:45pm. The Libertines went on at 11:40pm. Now, I've been to enough shows in my life to know that it does not take a band almost an hour to set up and play after the opening band has finished. Especially when all their equipment was already set up on stage. It's 2 guitars, a bass and drums! After checking all the instruments, the crowd was waiting at least 35 minutes for the band to start. We waited in a sea of very sweaty, very smelly, beer guzzling people for 35 minutes. Now, that may not seem like a long time to you but by the time the band came on, I was bored, pissed off, sweaty and smelly and just plain not excited to see the band anymore. I felt jipped that I payed to see a band who's entire set list was only 1/2 hour long. The time I waited to see them perform was longer than the performance itself! Ridiculous. In between songs, they took FOREVER drinking, smoking, and chatting. It was the most un-professional thing I've ever seen. Totally crap, cheeky shit. I don't get bugged that easily and that was just unacceptable. It wasn't all the better that all the songs sounded even more like Clash covers live and in person than they do on record. [...]

Sonic joys with The Libertines

von www.metromix.chicagotribune.com:

Interview mit Carl, August 2003

Auszug:
[...] Carl Barat of England's The Libertines speaks a mile a minute as he simultaneously searches for a spot with good cell phone reception and tries to escape the noise of a nearby soundcheck. "You're going to get a lot of mobile noise right now," he warns, as he stomps around what sounds like a cavernous, empty venue. "Because I've got a bad signal, and I'm going to be walking by a really loud band." Suddenly, a blast of guitar. "That's Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and there's Bernard Butler, bless him. It's like being on `Top of the Pops' here![...] "It's the same, really," Barat claims about playing without Doherty. "The songs are still songs of conviction. Those are the things that will bring a young man to ruin in these days."

As long as The Libertines keep going, fans of classic punk will be closer to heaven than ruin. The band sounds like a brilliantly sloppy synthesis of the Clash, the Jam, the Smiths and a host of your other favorite bands. "Unless your favorite band is the Osmonds," Barat says. "I'm not being completely serious, because I like the Osmonds. What's that song? [he hums `I Think I Love You' by the Partridge Family.] That's not the Osmonds, is it?"

The Libertines @ 7th Street Entry, Minneapolis, 9. August 2003

von www.howwastheshow.com:

Auszug:
If I were to compare seeing them to seeing two other overly-hyped bands, namely The Hives (First Avenue, 2002) and The Strokes (Entry, 2001), I'd have to say the Libertines did a pretty good job of living up to expectations, even without their troubled second lead singer Pete Doherty who among other things was recently arrested in London for burglary. However, with the backup vocals of bass player John Hassal and the Libertines' guitar tech (Nick something) filling in on second guitar as he's done at most shows since June I didn't feel much was missing in the live show. Other reviewers who have seen the band live with Doherty and Barat trading lead vocal duties had commented on the dynamic energy between the two, but never having seen that for myself I wasn't in a position to miss it[...] The performance was consistent, loud and from what I've read, typical of most shows on this tour. What came across to some people as snootiness on the part of the band, especially from lead singer Carl Barat was more likely the result of typical tour ennui, or perhaps the fact that it must be hard for a band to look from the stage into the tiny 7th St. Entry and realize that in just a few weeks they'll be playing the main stage at England's Reading and Leeds festivals to a potential 50,000 audience members.

The gig turned out the cream of the crop of Twin Cities scenesters, musicians and fans and pretty much covered the full (small so far) discography of the band which includes a couple singles and their first full-length release, "Up the Bracket"[...]

"Brit punk quartet the Libertines have temporarily replaced founding guitarist Pete Doherty while he battles drug addiction. "he needs to get better before he can rejoin them," a spokesperson says. Last spring, drummer Gary Powell told us, " Aftera show, most bands drink a few beers. With us, Carl runs off with a girl, and Pete runs off to get drugs. I guess we're not like most bands."

Doherty tells of crack hell

from www.thisislondon.com:

The former lead singer of one of Britain's most up-and-coming rock bands today admitted he is addicted to heroin and crack cocaine.

Today he told the Standard he had problems with drug dependence - but was determined to clean himself up and begin recording again with the group.

"Yes I'm a heroin addict, yes I'm addicted to crack cocaine, and I don't know what to do," he said.

"When I was arrested for burglary, they found traces of opiates and crack cocaine in my blood. I'm all cut up, unsure, I don't know what I'm doing, I need a good kicking and I need some help."

I changed my plea to guilty:

von www.nme.com:

Doherty, 24, pleaded guilty to burglary after breaking in to Barat's flat while the group were touring in Japan.

Horseferry Road Magistrate's Court heard that Doherty kicked his way into Barat's basement flat (July 25).

The clerk of the court read out the list of items Doherty was alleged to have snatched, including an antique guitar, video recorder, laptop computer, mouth organ, CD player, an NME award and £200 in cash.

When asked to enter his plea, Doherty replied: "I plead guilty apart from the NME Award and cash, which I know nothing about."[...]

Review vomKOnzert der Libs @ El Rey Theatre, LA 4. August 2003

Auszug:
[...] With the group's guitar tech, simply referred to as "Nick," filling in for Doherty on this tour, the band stills plays jagged, yet tuneful punk-styled numbers with rough-and-tumble abandon, but the chemistry between Barat and Doherty that surfaced during the Libertines' short Coachella festival performance this year was clearly missing.

The one-hour set was still impressive and full of lashing determination found in songs from the group's Rough Trade/Sanctuary debut, "Up the Bracket." Barat poured himself into his own songs and the ones written by the missing Doherty, while fill-in Nick rose to the occasion on the second guitar, with bassist John Hassall and smack-and-bash drummer Gary Powell wound tight for double-time and triple-time rhythms often sped up from the album[...]

Several new songs showed a continuing growth and another source of influence in the Kinks. In the near-anthem -- and new U.K. single -- "Don't Look Back Into the Sun," guitars were on the rise to push a surging pop melody[...]
