Legend says that Pete's older sister introduced Pete and Carl to each other. She obviously felt that the two of them would be connected by an incentive magnetical force that at times would keep them together but then again drive them apart. She probably didn't know, though, that not long after the "first encounter" a band called The Libertines would, well, not necessarily change the world, but at least shake up today's rather monotonous world of music and give a meaning to the lives of music freaks.
So the core of the band had been found:
Peter Doherty and Carlos Barât. But that wasn't enough for winning a war. What followed was a time of general mayhem.
‚Every man and every dog has been in The Libertines’, they say. Eventually John Hassal and Gary Powell got involved and went aboard the good ship Albion. Each of them with their own personality, their very own attitude. The Libertines. Probably the only band worthy of the usual comparisons to The Beatles due to their fresh and philosophical approach to music and being in a band.
But this was not the beginning of their career yet. After basically just messing about for some time, almost tainting the arcadian dream, they started to wonder if
founding an army would be a better option. Enter manageress Banny, dea ex machina. She kicked the boys' butts and made clear that the time was right and the world was only waiting for The Libertines.
And that was oh so true. Girls and boys, here they come …
And the rest of the story... well we'll leave that to music history...
